Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) by 9 wickets in the 17th match of IPL 2021. Captain KL Rahul and Chris Gayle played a key role in Punjab's victory. KL Rahul scored an unbeaten 60 and Gayle scored an innings of 43 runs; however, both of them played till 17.4 overs to reach the target of 132 runs on the slow pitch of Chennai. Earlier, Mumbai's team could only manage 131 runs at the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs. Barring captain Rohit Sharma (63) and Suryakumar Yadav (33), the remaining Mumbai batsmen struggled to score runs.

After the match, the anger of the current players and former veterans erupted over the Chennai wicket. Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Ben Stokes, who was ruled out of IPL 2021 due to injury, looked so angry with this pitch that he called it 'trash'. Stokes tweeted that he hopes the wicket will not get worse as the tournament progresses. A score between 160 and 170 runs should be scored on any wicket. But only between 130 and 140 are being scored on it. This is happening due to the 'garbage' wicket.

Like Stokes, former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee was also upset with Chennai's wicket. He also described the wicket as a surprise. The league said that this is a surprising wicket.
