In sports retiring a number is a rare event, it’s meant to honour a very select few who have achieved great things for the particular team, once the number is retired, no future player from the team can wear that number, its common practice in American sports league and club football.

The BCCI is bringing the tradition to cricket as they have decided to ‘’unofficially retire the famous No.10 which was worm by legend Sachin Tendulkar throughout his ODIs and for a solitary international T20.

The Master Blaster retired in November 2013 bringing a 24-year-long glittering career to an end. Sachin last worn No.10 in March 2012 against arch-rival Pakistan.

Since his retirement, the number was unused for five years before fast bowler Shardul Thakur decided to pull-up the number in his ODI debut at Colombo last August.

This lead to trolling to Thakur and BCCI, ridiculing the player and in-order to avoid such controversies, the cricket board decided to retire the number. However, players can use the number when they play for India A or non-international list A match.

According to reports, the cricket board spoke to top players from the Indian team and they all agreed that it made sense for No.10 to be retired.
