Ex-Chelsea No2 Holland: Southgate has 'some' Mourinho qualities

   
Former Chelsea assistant coach Steve Holland believes England boss Gareth Southgate has similar traits to Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho. Holland worked under Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Antonio Conte and Rafa Benitez at Stamford Bridge and believes Southgate has some of their qualities. England coach Holland said: “Gareth ticks so many of the boxes that the best that I've worked with tick. “There is an obvious difference. And I'm trying to say this without being in any with disrespectful towards Gareth — Jose Mourinho has won this title or that title in four or five different countries, and Gareth hasn't. His pathway has been different. “And he's a different personality. “But does he understand man-management and getting the best out of players? Yes. Does he understand the value of giving staff ownership and responsibility, and getting the best out of the staff? Yes, absolutely. “Does he have experience of international football at the highest level? Yes. More and more now he's gaining experience all the time. He's navigated England through a qualification campaign. “Obviously now we're in a World Cup, I'm sure he'd be the first to say he's developing and growing as a coach himself in this environment. “I've gradually seen over the last two years, in a humble way, I think he's really got to grips with everything that's involved and gained in confidence."

    England and Belgium squared off in a tie that was meant to decide the winner of Group G given both sides were already through to the Round of 16. The second-half was more open as Adnan Januzaj curled the ball into the back of the in the 51st minute which evidently served as a wakeup call for England.     England coach Gareth Southgate has defended resting Tottenham striker Harry Kane for their World Cup defeat to Belgium. Southgate rung the changes for England's final Group G match safe in the knowledge his side were already through to the round of 16.
