FIFA U-17 World Cup: Know your venue for the showpiece event

There are less than two weeks for the global tournament and six cities from the country have been bestowed the honour of hosting the showpiece event: Navi Mumbai, Margao, Kochi, Kolkata, Guwahati and New Delhi.


India is set to host FIFA tournament for the very first time which is scheduled to being from October 6th next month. The world’s best nations will take part in the FIFA U-17 World Cup, a footballing extravaganza held every two years. 

There are less than two weeks for the global tournament and six cities from the country have been bestowed the honour of hosting the showpiece event: Navi Mumbai, Margao, Kochi, Kolkata, Guwahati and New Delhi.

The each city will host group and knock-out stage matches but the football mad-city of Kolkata will host the final of the tournament. The opening matches will be played in the capital on October 6th where India will participate in its first-ever FIFA World Cup at any level.

Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi

The host kick-starts their World Cup campaign against the USA on 6 October at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium in New Delhi. The stadium will host all the home team group stage matches as well as the two-round of 16 matches.

Indira Gandhi Athletic International Stadium, Guwahati

The football-loving state of Guwahati will host group E teams which include 2001 winners France, as well as tournament debutants New Caledonia, along with Asian heavyweights Japan and Central American nation Honduras. The stadium will also be the venue for the Group F tie between Mexico and Chile.

Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata (Salt Lake Stadium)

The revamped stadium has received lot positives for the top-notch facilities which cost over Rs 100 crore. The football mad-city of Kolkata will be the venue for the final of the FIFA U-17 World Cup and the proverbial Group of Death in the tournament. The Group F which will be played in the City of Joy comprises of teams like England, Mexico, Chile and Iraq. It will also host a Group E match between Japan and New Caledonia.

Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kochi

The fans in Kochi will get to witness football powerhouses like Spain and Brazil, the duo will be joined in the group by Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and debutants Niger. Apart from hosting group D matches, the stadium will also host one group C match between Germany and Guinea. The Nehru stadium will also host a Round of 16 matches and a quarter-final battle.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Goa

Margao’s Nehru Stadium will play host to Germany, Iran, Guinea and the Central American team of Costa Rica. The stadium will also host Group D encounter between Brazil and Niger as well as Round of 16 and quarter-final match.

DR. DY Patil Sports Stadium, Navi Mumbai

The DY Patil stadium will host Group B matches which consist of Paraguay, Mali, New Zealand and Turkey. Apart from Group B fixtures, the stadium will also host a Group A clash between USA and Colombia. A key round of 16 and the second semi-final will also be played at the venue.
