18-year-old Nketiah save Arsenal's League Cup campain

In English football that opportunity arises in the League Cup where team field their top youth players but even in the cup that is known for showcasing youth talent is filled with first-team players who fail to get game time in League or Continental matches

The way football is at the moment, youths getting opportunity on big stage is far less than back in the days, look at Chelsea, they have loaned more than 20 players on loan while Manchester City are stacked, meaning no chance for academy product, perfect example Jordan Sancho, their most promising youngster left City in the summer for footballing reasons.

In English football that opportunity arises in the League Cup where team field their top youth players but even in the cup that is known for showcasing youth talent is filled with first-team players who fail to get game time in League or Continental matches. However, there were youngsters, who were given the opportunity and one of which was Arsenals Eddie Nketiah.

The 18-year-old was introduced in the 80th minute when the Gunners were a goal down against lower league side Norwich. Nketiah scored with his very first touch, latching onto a deflected corner to tap home the equaliser before firing Arsenal into the lead in extra time with a close-range headed effort.

He helped Arsenal book a place in the quarter-finals and also etched his name into the history books by becoming the first player born after Arsene Wenger’s tenure started to score for the club.

The south London lad grabbed his opportunity with both hands and made sure everyone particularly Arsenal fans remembers his name which they did as by the final whistle Arsenal faithful’s were chanting ‘Eddie, Eddie, Eddie’.

The Arsenal manager summed it up perfectly, ‘’ life gives chances to young people. I can’t remember a time when a young player has made such an impact.

So who is Eddie Nketiah?

Nketiah was born in Lewisham, south London in May 1999, and grew up supporting Arsenal

Nketiah spent seven years in the Chelsea youth ranks between 2008 and 2015 but was eventually let go after the club's coaches feared he was too small. Arsenal invited him for a week-long trial soon after and impressed by what they saw offered him a youth contract.

After joining Arsenal Nketiah has scored goals regularly across different the age groups, and he ended his debut season (2015-16) as the under-18s' top scorer, with 24 goals in 28 appearances.

Midway through the following season, Nketiah was promoted to the under-23 side, and he ended the campaign with a total of more than 20 goals combined for the two youth sides.
