'Simmering anger' among CSK players resulted in the IPL 2018 triumph: N Srinivasan

"The team did not deserve the punishment they got." Back in 2013, the popular Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were handed a two-year suspension by the Supreme Court-appointed Justice Lodha committee for their involvement in betting and spot-fixing scandals. The committee banned former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president N Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan, a former official of the Super Kings, for life. However, the team, captained by the evergreen MS Dhoni, made a stupendous comeback, winning the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Moreover, they also equalled Mumbai Indians (MI) as the team with most IPL titles. Recently, Srinivasan, whose company India Cements own CSK, mentioned that the punishment was harsh and the anger in their players led to Chennai's victory in the IPL 2018. "No player made a mistake. It was an attack on the superior performance of the team. Jealousy, maybe. The team did not deserve the punishment they got. The simmering anger among the players for being treated like this is what brought about the victory [in 2018]. They were determined to prove again [that] 'we are the best'," Srinivasan was quoted as saying in the Times of India (TOI). Criticism for the BCCI Srinivasan also lashed at the BCCI and reckons that it's currently in a shambolic state and there's no one to take proper decisions for the betterment of Indian cricket. The BCCI is led by the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), consisting of former Comptroller and Auditor General of India Vinod Rai and Diana Edulji, the former women's cricketer. "There is nobody to take decisions, rules are being changed in domestic cricket to suit personal needs, there are no committees (disciplinary, technical, etc) in place. From what had been a strong administrative policy that the BCCI had put in place, it's all being destroyed slowly," he added.
