India eye series win at Lord’s - Mumbai Indians

He has now scored 237 runs on this tour without being dismissed at a brisk rate. His opening partner, Shikhar Dhawan, was dealing in boundaries during his stay in the first ODI before he threw his wicket away.

Team India stamped their authority with complete dominance in both departments to send a strong message to England at Trent Bridge, the happy hunting ground for Eoin Morgan and Co.

Apart from seeming clueless against Kuldeep, England also had no answer to Rohit Sharma’s class. With only a day’s break available, the hosts have a lot of homework to do before they take the field at Lord’s in a bid to save the series.

Here’s a preview of what both the dressing rooms look like.

From the Indian dressing room:

The loss of two of India’s premier seamers -- Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar was felt in the initial overs when England raced away to 70-odd runs at the end of the powerplay.

But Kuldeep Yadav pegged England back with wickets at regular intervals. If Bhuvneshwar Kumar recovers, he will walk into the playing XI. India also have Shardul Thakur on the bench if they want to make amends.

Rohit Sharma scored his first ton against England at Trent Bridge. He has now scored 237 runs on this tour without being dismissed at a brisk rate. His opening partner, Shikhar Dhawan, was dealing in boundaries during his stay in the first ODI before he threw his wicket away. So to make it big at the Mecca of cricket will be on his list when he takes the field on Saturday.

Virat Kohli ended a long-time debate in relation to his batting position when he walked out at number three and scored a fine 75. KL Rahul was pushed to number four so along with him, India’s middle order remains untested.

Suresh Raina chipped in with a few overs to show his worth and he’ll be itching to prove his mettle with the bat too. MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya are potent finishers while India will not want to fiddle with their spin-twins.

From the English dressing room:

England, perhaps, have a lot to worry about. Their openers did a decent job before Roy threw his wicket away staging a massive downfall. Eoin Morgan will be hoping for his batsmen to put price behind their wicket.

Alex Hales’ absence due to an injury has already hurt England so to compensate for it, they can probably try batting Jos Buttler higher in the order. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow have struggled to read Kuldeep Yadav and since the recovery time is less, they will need to mentally prepare themselves to read him from his wrist.

England’s pace battery has been ineffective too. David Willey, Mark Wood and Liam Plunkett couldn’t trouble India’s top-order so the management might consider a change with Tom Curran warming the bench.

Adil Rashid may have undone Virat Kohli but England will be expecting more from him and right-arm off break Moeen Ali in order to stop the Indian batsmen from scoring freely in the middle overs. Overall, England will be hoping to put up a fight at Lord’s.

The second ODI begins at 3.30 PM IST on July 14.
