MI miss out on playoff berth - Mumbai Indians

Abhishek Sharma and Shankar added 34 in the last three overs as Rahman, Bumrah and Cutting gave away the odd boundary. With 18 needed off the last over, Cutting raised MI’s hopes by smashing Harshal Patel’s first ball for a six.

Our season is over. And the defending champions are now former champions.

Mumbai Indians crashed out of the 2018 VIVO IPL after a 11-run loss at the hands of bottom-placed Delhi Daredevils at Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi on Sunday. We finished our campaign with 12 points in 14 games.

Chasing 175, MI were bowled out for 163 in 19.5 overs. Ben Cutting staged a late fightback with a 20-ball 37, but once he was out in the last over, there was nothing much MI could do. Five batsmen fell for single digits as DD’s leg-spinners wreaked havoc. Sandeep Lamichhane and Amit Mishra shared six wickets as MI lost to DD for the second time in the season.

It all came down to the last three overs. With 38 needed, Cutting turned the tables by hitting Liam Plunkett for two fours and a six. Trent Boult bowled a tidy 19th over by conceding five runs and removing Mayank Markande. With 18 needed off the last over, Cutting raised MI’s hopes by smashing Harshal Patel’s first ball for a six. But Patel fought back by having Cutting caught in the deep. Jasprit Bumrah was the last man out as MI’s below-par season came to an end.

Evin Lewis top-scored with 48 off 31 even as Suryakumar Yadav (12), Ishan Kishan (5), Kieron Pollard (7), Rohit Sharma (13) and Krunal Pandya (7) failed to deliver. Hardik Pandya made 27 but played a rash shot at an inopportune time. Boult and Glenn Maxwell also combined wonderfully well on two occasions to pull off relay catches. Pollard and Sharma were the victims.

Earlier, Rishabh Pant scored an entertaining 64 (44 balls, 4x4, 4x6) and added as many runs with Vijay Shankar (43*, 30 balls, 3x4, 2x6) as DD posted 174/4. Pant, who walked in at No. 4 with the scoreboard reading 38/2 after 4.3 overs, continued his superb form. By the time the southpaw was done, he had taken his season’s tally to 684 runs. He also reclaimed the Orange Cap from Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Kane Williamson. Krunal Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Mayank Markande picked up a wicket each as MI bowled well in patches.

DD got off to a fine start with Prithvi Shaw and Glenn Maxwell hitting a flurry of boundaries to make it 30/0 in three overs. A moment of casualness from Shaw coupled with some great presence of mind from Hardik Pandya resulted in the first wicket. Maxwell defended one to point and decided against running. Shaw, who backed up too far, fell to a rocket throw from Hardik.

Bumrah struck gold when he ended Maxwell’s horrific season with a ball that angled back in, took the inside edge and crashed into the leg-stump. Maxwell made 22 off 18 with the help of four boundaries. He finished the season with 169 runs in 12 outings.

Pant started off with a delightful punch between cover and point as DD ended the Powerplay on 46/2. In the next over, Pant pulled Markande for a four before smashing the last ball over deep mid-wicket for the first maximum of the afternoon. Pant raced away to 30 off just 16 with two fours in consecutive overs.

MI pulled one back in the ninth over when Markande had DD skipper Shreyas Iyer caught in the deep. Iyer, who made only six, hit the ball down the throat of Krunal Pandya at deep mid-wicket. Krunal did well to ensure his feet didn’t touch the boundary rope.

New man Shankar teed off with a boundary as DD reached 83/3 at the halfway stage. A couple of tight overs later, Shankar hit a delightful loft off the bowling of Ben Cutting. DD crossed the 100-run mark soon after.

Bumrah, who conceded just 17 in his first two overs, bowled a tidy 14th by giving away just four runs. The 15th over bowled by Mustafizur Rahman, who replaced Mitchell McClenaghan in the XI, was the most eventful of the innings. Pant hit a one-handed six, then smashed the next ball so hard it hurt Rahman’s toe. The bowler took off his left shoe and received assistance from the physio. That episode also resulted in two overthrows. Pant then completed his fifty with a single before Shankar finished things off with a four as 13 came off the over.

Pant tore into Hardik by unleashing the reverse pull in the 16th over. The ball sailed over third man. Pant then got a leg-before decision reversed after replays showed the ball had pitched outside leg. It was poor umpiring from CK Nandan. Pant made the most of the reprieve by smashing another one-handed six, this time over deep mid-wicket as 16 runs came from the over.

Krunal, who opened the bowling, returned to dismiss Pant by inducing a big hit to Kieron Pollard at long-on. Abhishek Sharma and Shankar added 34 in the last three overs as Rahman, Bumrah and Cutting gave away the odd boundary. MI skipper Sharma suffered an injury scare in the 19th over when he hurt his shoulder after dropping Shankar at point.

Brief Scores: Delhi Daredevils 174/4 in 20 overs (Glenn Maxwell 22, Rishabh Pant 64, Vijay Shankar 43*, Abhishek Sharma 15*; Krunal Pandya 1/11, Jasprit Bumrah 1/29, Mayank Markande 1/21) beat Mumbai Indians 163 all out in 19.3 overs (Evin Lewis 48, Hardik Pandya 27, Ben Cutting 37; Sandeep Lamichhane 3/36, Trent Boult 1/33, Harshal Patel 3/28, Amit Mishra 3/19) by 11 runs.
