Day 1 of the Lord’s Test was washed out without the coin being tossed. Cut to Day 2.

India made two changes to the team that lost at Edgbaston. Umesh Yadav and Shikhar Dhawan made way for Kuldeep Yadav and Cheteshwar Pujara with England handing a debut to the 20-year-old Ollie Pope in place of Dawid Malan and Chris Woakes earning a recall in place of an unavailable Ben Stokes.

England opted to bowl with cloud cover aiding swing bowlers. India lost Murali Vijay (0) and KL Rahul (8) early to James Anderson before rain interrupted play. India’s troubles persisted after rain when a mix-up between Cheteshwar Pujara (1) and Virat Kohli saw the former being run out.

Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane stuck around for a while, adding 34 runs for the fourth wicket before Joe Root introduced Chris Woakes into the attack.

Woakes was quick to remove Kohli (23) and Hardik Pandya (11) before Sam Curran got rid of Dinesh Karthik for 1 with the visitors being reduced to 62/6.

Rahane (18) and Kuldeep Yadav (0) fell to James Anderson but Ravichandran Ashwin displayed character in his 29-run knock before getting out to Stuart Broad. Shami struck two fours prior to Anderson trapping Ishant Sharma for a duck to bowl India out for a paltry 107 on another rain-hit day.

Day 3 saw England lose a promising Alastair Cook (21) and Keaton Jennings (11) in quick succession but debutant Ollie Pope resurrected England’s innings with skipper Joe Root.

Just when India needed to strike, Hardik Pandya induced an outside edge that saw Pope depart for 28. Mohammed Shami raised hopes when he bagged Joe Root leaving England in all sorts of trouble at 89/4. However, Jos Buttler’s quick cameo helped England walk past the Indian total and take an initial lead before Mohammed Shami removed him to give India hope.

Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes had a different plan. To bat India out of the Test. The conditions kept getting better, the sun came out with the hosts adding 141 runs in the second session with the loss of just one wicket.

Chris Woakes got to his maiden Test ton and in the process, became the 10th cricketer to have himself featured on the Lord’s honours board for both his batting and bowling exploits. India finally managed a way to break the 189-run stand when Hardik got rid of Bairstow for 93.

Sam Curran joined Woakes but bad light forced an early end to day 3 with England taking a massive 250-run lead. Day 4 saw Curran and Woakes add quick runs before Pandya dismissed the southpaw for 40 for Root to call his side back.

India started their second innings 289 runs behind and lost Murali Vijay for a duck again. Rahul played against the line and departed for 10. India had to promote Ajinkya Rahane with Virat Kohli sitting out for 37 minutes.

The visitors' resistance was challenged by Stuart Broad who dismissed Rahane (13), Pujara (17), Kohli (17) and Karthik (0) to keep India reeling at 61/6.

Hardik Pandya and Ravichandran Ashwin got together to add 54-runs in a partnership that saw them play exquisite strokes, take blows and leave good balls. Pandya’s 26-run resistance and India’s fight came to an end when Woakes trapped him in front of the stumps.

Ravichandran Ashwin remained stranded on 33* with India bundling out for 130.

England and India meet in the third Test on Saturday at Trent Bridge.
