While many hail the historic 2008 final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to be Wimbledon’s greatest final, the 2019 final between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic was another example of how good these stars perform, in the tensest situations, and what a beautiful game both of them can produce under such pressure.

It was the longest Wimbledon singles final spanning over 4 hours and 57 minutes, and the only one where the final set tie break rule was used. Federer, the 20-time Grand Slam championship, had two spectacular championship points but Djokovic managed to creep past him, to win the deciding set 13-12 (7-3). This was Djokovic's seventh Wimbledon title, which makes him one of the four male players in the open era to win a Grand Slam 7 or more times. He joined Pete Sampras record of seven Wimbledon’s and is preceded only by Federer's 8 Wimbledon’s and Nadal's record 12 French Open titles.

IPL 2019

IPL has, since its inception been a huge sporting event with a lot of money, effort and players involved. The teams which qualified for the playoff’s offs were the defending champions, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, which was so renamed from Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In 2019, the league was won by the Mumbai Indian, after they beat the defending champions, Chennai Super Kings. It was a very close match as CSK needed only two runs off the final ball to seal their victory, but their batsmen Shardul Thakur was prevented by veteran Lasith Malinga, which led Mumbai to their fourth IPL victory.

Badminton World Championships

The Badminton Championship also recorded a huge number of viewers and enthusiasts across the world and can easily be considered to be one of the sporting milestones of 2019. Held from 19 to 25 August 2019, in Switzerland’s Basel, was noteworthy also because India’s Pusarla V Sindhu won the gold in the women’s category by defeating a familiar rival Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in a final that only lasted 38 minutes. This medal, which marks Sindhu’s fifth World Championship medal, makes her the first Indian to win gold in this tournament. The gold in the men’s’ category was won by Kento Momota from Japan, which P Sainath, from India, managed to clinch a bronze.

Rugby World Cup

The Rugby World Cup, which is the third-largest sports event worldwide, after the Summer Olympics and the Football World Cup also took place in 2019. England defeated the tournament favourites New Zealand to enter the finals and South Africa and clinched their spot in the finals by defeating Wales.  South Africa won the tournament and Siya Kolisi made history to become the first Black player to lead his team to victory. The match was almost a repeat telecast of the 2007 final where South Africa had one by defeating England.
