Indian rowers Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh qualified for the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday after finishing second in the final race of the Asia-Oceania Continental Qualifying Regatta in the men's lightweight double sculls event in Tokyo.
Indian rowers Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh qualified for the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday after finishing second in the final race of the Asia-Oceania Continental Qualifying Regatta in the men's lightweight double sculls event in Tokyo. Another Indian rover, Jakar Khan went on to finish fourth in the men's singles sculls final.
There were five Olympic quotas in this category but he missed out on qualifying as a country gets only one qualifying position in this regatta.
The top three ranked players in the men's lightweight double sculls qualify for the Olympics. Rajalakshmi Singh Dev, president of the Indian Rowing Federation, told PTI: "A country can qualify in only one boat from this regatta and since Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh had finished second in men's lightweight double sculls, they will qualify"
However, Jakar Khan missed out on qualifying for the Olympics. She said, "Jakar went on to finish fourth in the men's singles sculls but unfortunately he will not be able to qualify for the Olympics. Arjun Lal and Arvind Singh were ranked better, hence they qualified. "
Arjun Lal and Arvind Singh will be India's only rovers in the Tokyo Olympic Games starting on 23 July as India will not be able to participate in other Olympic qualifiers due to the Covid-19 epidemic. Dev said, "There is another Olympic qualifier in Italy but we are not sending anybody due to the COVID-19 situation. So, this will be our only participation in the Olympics." A 14-member Indian team took part in the competition held at Sea Forest Waterway in Tokyo."
