We could have made a match with 140 runs on the board: Jadhav

Playing at the Ferozeshah Kotla, this time as part of the visiting team, Varun Aaron dealt two telling blows to push the Delhi Daredevils on the back-foot. The Royal Challengers Bangalore pacer claimed Yuvraj Singh and Angelo Mathews off successive deliveries to leave the hosts reeling on 39 for four and tip the scales in his team’s favour. Making good use of the bounce and conditions at the Kotla, the pacer helped set-up RCB’s second successive victory.

While speaking to ipt20.com after the comprehensive win, Aaron said working with Dennis Lille, and inputs from Allan Donald and Bharat Arun had helped him sharpen his craft. Excerpts from the interview:You took the two wickets that broke DD’s back.

What were your plans when you were running to bowl to Yuvraj Singh and Angelo Mathews, two very dangerous batsmen? There was obviously planning around Angelo (Mathews) and Yuvi bhai (Yuvraj Singh). In T20 you always plan, but rarely things go according to plan. It just came off really well today for all of us.

Could you elaborate on the plan you had?We just wanted to bowl hard lengths in the beginning and luckily the wicket was doing a little bit and that just worked for us. There was bounce in the wicket. Did that help you?Yes! Bounce in the wicket always helps, especially when it goes through well with good bounce.

This wicket was really pleasing to bowl on after bowling in Bangalore for the past two matches. Are you disappointed on missing out on a hat-trick?Yes it is (disappointing). But it’s never really under your control, especially with the white ball which doesn’t do much.

Maybe if you are bowling with a red ball you have a better chance, but well, it is luck. Those two wickets came after changing ends. Did the change of ends help in any way?No, not at all.

I felt that I had bowled the first two overs well too. It is just three edges (resulted in) three boundaries; that happens in T20. I just backed myself to come back and bowl two good overs after that.

How have you worked on bringing more discipline in your bowling?I went to Australia and I had a stint with Dennis Lillee for a week (and) that really helped me a lot. I was disappointed not make it to the World Cup and I had time in my hands. So before the Irani Trophy, I had gone over there (to Australia) and then I immediately picked up six wickets (on return).

I felt I was bowling well in the first two-three matches (too), but just the odd over was going wrong. I was just waiting for a match like this to come up with a good performance. What was it that Dennis Lillee and you worked on that has made a difference? It’s not just Dennis Lillee, obviously that (stint) helped me a lot.

But even before coming into this match I spent some good time with AD (Allan Donald) and Bharat Arun at the nets and that also really helped me. The areas that he helped me on were just basic stuff; he helped me with the technique and that just helped me be more accurate. We worked on my bowling action.

How was it bowling against your former team?DD was really good for me. I played for India after playing for Delhi Daredevils and this ground has a special place for me. I never thought of them to be my ex-team or anything like that.

I was just happy to come up with a good performance. How has it been playing with Mitchell Starc?Mitch is great. Having Mitch in the team is an asset for any team.

He is a great bowler and a good team man as well. He gets that wicket upfront which makes it easier because the opposition goes on the back-foot right there. It is good fun playing with Mitch.

RCB must be in a good space with back-to-back wins under the belt?Definitely, we are in a good place now. This is what we always spoke about since last year that these are the performances that RCB is all about - comprehensive wins, because we have got the talent and we have got the players. I am really glad that we have put in two really great wins.
