The league is the brainchild of Anand Mahindra and Charu Sharma and came into being since 2014. Mashal Sports has acquired the rights to organise the league for a period of 10 years from International Kabaddi Federation (IKF) with an option to renew it further.

While earlier there had been eight teams, the 5th season of the league shall become more competitive four new franchises getting added. U Mumba has been the most dominant team and has made maximum final appearances.
