US Open Highlights: Sharavpova survives, Alexander Zverev out

In another match, Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard has been knocked out in the first round, losing 7-6, 6-1 to Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina.


Maria Sharapova playing in her first Grand Slam after her 15 months doping suspension has already caused an upset by sending home second seed Simona Halep in round one but Sharapova found herself flirting with an early exit before bouncing back to beat Timea Babos. The world No 59 had two points to lead 4-2 in the second set but ultimately failed to capitalize and went down 6-7, 6-4, 6-1.

While in men’s, Alexander Zverev lost to another young gun Borna Coric in the second round of the US Open. The fourth seed had to play second fiddle 20-year-old as Coric, withstanding huge pressure in the fourth set to win 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-4). Zverev already has five titles, including two at Masters level, but his search for a Grand Slam continues.

Whereas Denis Shapovalov caused a major upset beating eight seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 to advance to the third round. Shapovalov had got off to a good start breaking the 32-year-old Tsonga to love in the opening game and the only sign of nerves came in the third set when he was broken while serving for the match before he rebounded in the tie-break.
