IPL 2021: Indian cricket fans furious over Dhoni's full-length dive in CSK vs RR
Cricket fans reacted differently to Dhoni's breathtaking dive as it reminded them of a similar incident from the India vs Newzealand tie in the semifinal of 2019 CWC.
Chennai Super Kings defeated Rajasthan Royals by 45 runs in the 12th match of IPL 2021. CSK scored 188 runs losing 9 wickets while batting first in the match. Dhoni made a full-stretched dive to avoid a run-out at one point in the match and it reminded the fans of a similar incident from the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
Coming in to bat at No.7 in 14th over Dhoni, playing the third ball of his innings in this match, tried to steal a run by pushing a ball from Rahul Tewatia towards the cover, but non-striker Ravindra Jadeja, standing at the other end, sent him back. Then the fielder picked up the ball and threw it towards keeper Sanju Samson and he blew the wickets. However, Dhoni's superb full-length dive saved his wicket. It was seen in the replay that if Dhoni had not dived, he would have walked to the pavilion.
As soon as Dhoni saved his wicket by diving in this match, it reminded the fans of the 2019 Cricket World Cup. People started giving various reactions on Twitter after Dhoni's dive. In fact, Dhoni was India's only support while chasing a score against New Zealand in the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup, India needed 25 off 10 balls to reach the final of that World Cup with a well-set Dhoni batting in the middle. The legendary cricketer, who had just hit six in the first ball of Lockie Ferguson’s over tapped it towards the deep square-leg region in the third ball and pushed for two to retain strike. Dhoni’s challenge was to beat Martin Guptill – regarded as one of the best fielders in world cricket. Guptill picked up the ball quickly and with a bullet-liked throw, hit the target with only one stump to aim. And unlike on Monday, Dhoni didn’t dive and he was short of his crease. India lost the match by 18 runs and was knocked out of the World Cup.
