Anil Kumble, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest spinners of all time turns 47 today. In a career, spanning nearly two decades, the Jumbo took 619 wickets in Test and 337 in ODIs.

He holds the record of only Indian and only the second player to have taken 10 wickets in a single Test inning. Anil Kumble remains the third highest wicket-taker and is the only Indian and the third player to have taken more than 600 wickets in a career.

1999, Feroz Shah Kotla

This has to go down one of the greatest individual performance, India needed a win to level the scores against arch-rival Pakistan. The home side had posted an improbable target of 420 and chasing a mammoth total, visitors were off to a great start but the momentum was utterly smashed by Kumble, who took 10/74 to bowl India to their first win against Pakistan in 19 years.

2002, St John

NBA has Michael Jordan’s flu game while cricket has Anil Kumble’s broken jaw game. In the third day of the fourth Test against West Indies, the spinner took the field with a bandage over his fractured jaw, a result of a sickening blow when batting earlier. Kumble bowled a stirring spell of 14 overs in which he got the prize wicket of Brian Lara.

2007, Oval

Kumble is known for his bowling skills but on this occasion, the Jumbo surprised everyone with his batting touch. In the final Test against England, Kumble made his maiden Test century, sprawled at the crease, Kumble raised himself to his feet and celebrated like a boy.
