He made his ODI debut in 1978 and scored 883 runs at an average of 28.48 for India. Sharma leaves behind his wife Renu, son Chirag and two daughters Preeti, Puja.

Sharma played an innings of 89 runs off 120 balls. Sharma also scored 40 against Australia and an innings of 61 runs against England in difficult conditions. Sharma scored 240 runs in the tournament at an average of 34.28. India finally won the World Cup.
