Aurangabad: The police have banned the black and yellow taxis beyond certain limits in the city on an experimental basis between 8am and 9pm with effect from Wednesday. The move has taken the drivers of these six- and nine-seater taxis by surprise because only recently the curbs on them to enter the city limits had been lifted. The police have invited objections or suggestions within 29 days while warning that violation of its ban notification would attract penalties under section 131 of the Mumbai Police Act.The taxi drivers said they were studying the fresh diktat and may approach the Bombay high court again. In a short-lived relief to about 3,000 such taxi operators as well as numerous commuters, police commissioner Amitesh Kumar had on March 8 withdrawn his notification banning their entry into the city limits.During the course of hearing of a petition in the high court that had challenged the diktat, the city police had withdrawn the notification that was issued in July 2015.As many as 10 aggrieved taxi drivers and owners holding valid permits had approached the high court challenging the earlier notification, following which they were not even allowed to pass through the city with passengers between 8 am and 9 pm.A large number of commuters had to take a long detour to hail these taxis, which had to be parked outside the city limits, lawyer Rahul Total had said. When the matter came up for hearing before the HC bench comprising Justices T V Nalawade and Sangitrao Patil, government pleader Amarjitsingh Girase told the court that the police were willing to withdraw the notification.Girase had told the court that the notification would be withdrawn within a week. He had said that there was some technical compliance that was not met while introducing the notification. The police chief, however, issued a fresh notification on Monday after making some modification in his earlier diktat. These vehicles will also be allowed to ply in the city if they are on educational tours or transporting marriage guests.Meanwhile, Ashok Narke of the Kali-Peeli taxi driver-owners association, said the fresh diktat will adversely affect their business, although these vehicles have got some space inside the city."We will be facing difficulties. We are studying the fresh notification and might approach the high court again. The police had withdrawn the earlier notification when we approached the high court," said Narke.
