As Tamil Nadu gears up to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has taken a proactive step to promote eco-friendly festivities and prevent pollution of water bodies during the immersion of Ganesh idols. In a recent press release TNPCB has issued a set of guidelines to ensure a more sustainable and environmentally conscious celebration of this beloved festival. As Tamil Nadu gears up to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has taken a proactive step to promote eco-friendly festivities and prevent pollution of water bodies during the immersion of Ganesh idols. In a recent press release TNPCB has issued a set of guidelines to ensure a more sustainable and environmentally conscious celebration of this beloved festival. The key highlights of these guidelines are: Natural Eco-Friendly Materials: TNPCB encourages the use of idols made exclusively from natural biodegradable and eco-friendly raw materials. Idols should be crafted without toxic or inorganic substances such as traditional clay and mud. Plaster of Paris (PoP) plastic and thermocol (polystyrene) are strictly prohibited materials for idol making. Ornamentation with Natural Elements: To adorn the idols only dried flower components and straw should be used. Natural resins from trees are recommended for adding shine to the idols. This promotes the use of sustainable and organic materials in the decoration process. Ban on Single-Use Plastics and Thermocol: The use of single-use plastic and thermocol materials is strictly prohibited. Eco-friendly alternatives like straw should be utilized for making idols or decorating pandals/tazias to prevent pollution of water bodies. Safe and Non-Toxic Paints: Toxic and non-biodegradable chemical dyes and oil-based paints are not allowed for painting idols. Instead eco-friendly water-based biodegradable and non-toxic natural dyes should be used. This shift towards safer paints ensures that water bodies remain uncontaminated. Natural Decorative Clothes: For beautifying idols removable and washable decorative clothes made solely from natural materials and natural dyes should replace disposable materials containing paints and other harmful chemicals. This promotes sustainability in idol attire. Immersion in Designated Locations: The TNPCB advises devotees to immerse the idols only in locations designated by the District Administrations. These locations are selected to minimise the environmental impact of immersion.
