Cuttack Municipal Corporation undertakes drain construction work

CUTTACK: Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has taken up construction work of dilapidated and broken drains, which was a long standing demand of the denizens. To ensure quality work, CMC commissioner Gyana Das has issued strict instructions to the engineers to supervise the work on a daily basis. "In monsoons, these broken drains turn a headache for us. "We are trying to complete majority of the work before monsoons," said a CMC official. CMC officials claimed they are trying to complete the work in time.

CUTTACK: Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has taken up construction work of dilapidated and broken drains, which was a long standing demand of the denizens. At least 24 drain sites across the city have been identified for restoration and construction work and around Rs 8 crore will be spent on the project.The civic body has received funds under Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns(UIDSSMT) for the project. CMC aims to complete the project within six months. To ensure quality work, CMC commissioner Gyana Das has issued strict instructions to the engineers to supervise the work on a daily basis. The junior engineers, assistant engineers, deputy executive engineer, assistant executive engineers have been directed to make field visits and monitor the quality and quantity of work to ensure that the project meets it deadline."The engineers shall be held responsible for ensuring proper quality, quantity, level and alignment of the drains being constructed. In case of any deficiency or deviation , recovery shall be made from them," said the order issued by CMC commissioner. Besides, action will also be taken against the erring officials.CMC officials claimed that the civic body will show no leniency if the quality of work is not upto the mark. Water logging is a perennial problem of the Millennium city and the problem gets more exaggerated due to the broken and dilapidated drains.Denizens alleged that in many areas, drains are in a very bad shape and needs immediate repair. "In monsoons, these broken drains turn a headache for us. Rain water could not pass easily in these broken and blocked drains and the locality gets inundated," said Jayant Das, a lawyer. CMC officials claimed they are trying to complete the work in time. "We are trying to complete majority of the work before monsoons," said a CMC official.
