Smart jacket for BSF personnel wins youngsters top honours

The two-day ‘Hack2help’ event was jointly hosted by the U.S. Consulate General, Chennai, and Learning Links Foundation, with the support of Kerala Startup Mission, Maker Village and Science Society of India. Besides, the team also developed an IT-enabled hardware device which can be installed along the borders to detect human presence and alert the control room. They developed a prototype of a safety jacket for Border Security Force personnel that senses imminent attacks on the wearer and communicates the location of the enemy in real time. Innovation in the defence sector is not that common when it comes to hackathons. But that is what exactly won the three-member team of Ajay Sangwan, Rohit T. and Vivek Jose from Kochi’s Maker Village electronics incubator the top prize at a two-day hackathon for product start-ups developing smart solutions for everyday problems.

Samir Dayal Singh, Mayank Raj, Abhinav Gautam and Shantanu Garg from School of Engineering, Cochin University of Science and Technology, bagged the second prize for developing a smart solution to the unhygienic public toilets. Jithin M.S., Govindan Nampoothiri, Jobin Joseph and Clinz Stephen of Saintgits College of Engineering emerged third for developing a web portal that helps farmers sell their products direct to the end customer.
