Man ostracised for not paying Rs 10,000 kills himself

MYSURU: Upset with the social boycott imposed on him by village leaders, a 55-year-old farmer from Tondavaadi village in Chamarajanagar district committed suicide by consuming poison. But he refused to pay the fine which allegedly prompted village leaders to socially boycott him and his family. His relatives reportedly refused to talk to him fearing the wrath of village leaders.This social boycott upset Nayaka deeply, say family members. Leaders had allegedly warned villagers not to speak to Nayaka when he visits the village. Sidda Nayaka's son Mahesh has registered a complaint against 15 persons including the village leader, Chikkavarada Nayaka blaming them for the death of his father.

MYSURU: Upset with the social boycott imposed on him by village leaders, a 55-year-old farmer from Tondavaadi village in Chamarajanagar district committed suicide by consuming poison. His last rites were held on Wednesday amid police security.Siddu, the son of Sidda Nayaka , 55, in an inebriated state had damaged the autorickshaw of Kumar, also from Tondavaadi village in Gundlupet taluk.The issue was brought before village elders who allegedly asked Nayaka to pay Rs 10,000 as fine for the damage. But he refused to pay the fine which allegedly prompted village leaders to socially boycott him and his family. Challenging the village leaders' decision, Nayaka approached Begur police station and registered a complaint.Based on his complaint circle inspector Krishnappa visited the village and brought about a compromise between the warring parties.Nayaka and his family resided outside the village where they ran a hotel off the highway and farmed their one-acre land.The family was not in regular contact with villagers after the incident.On February 2, when a relative of Nayaka died in the village he visited them. Leaders had allegedly warned villagers not to speak to Nayaka when he visits the village. His relatives reportedly refused to talk to him fearing the wrath of village leaders.This social boycott upset Nayaka deeply, say family members. The next day he consumed poison near his house. He walked towards Begur police station but collapsed on the way. Villagers rushed him to a private hospital from where he was shifted to KR Hospital.On Tuesday evening, Sidda Nayaka died after failing to respond to treatment.On Wednesday, amid police security he was cremated in the village. Sidda Nayaka's son Mahesh has registered a complaint against 15 persons including the village leader, Chikkavarada Nayaka blaming them for the death of his father. Police have registered a case and are searching for the accused who are absconding.
