Six-year-old Khadki boy drowns in swimming pool

PUNE: A six-year-old boy, Omkar Gaikwad, drowned in a swimming pool located in a residential society close to his home in Khadki on Tuesday evening.It is suspected that the boy may have climbed the compound wall of his Gagan Garima housing society on Chikhalwadi Road in Khadki to get to the neighbouring society, Mont Vert Pristine. The society members use the other pool which has a lifeguard and other facilities," he said.Mule said no one in his society knows how the boy entered the premises and got into the pool. "The watchman noticed the boy's body in the pool and called for an ambulance which took him to hospital," he added.

As of now, the Khadki police have registered a case of accidental death.Omkar's father Prashant Gaikwad told TOI that his son, a Std II student of an English medium school in Range Hills, attended classes on Tuesday morning. "At 2pm, I picked him up from school and dropped him home before heading out for my work. After lunch, he played outside for half-an-hour before returning home for a nap. At 5pm, he decided to play cricket outside but found no friends. Fifteen minutes later, we learnt that he had drowned in the pool," he said.Gaikwad, who drives a cab, said his son would often climb the compound wall of the housing society to fetch the ball from the neighbouring society.Narendra Mule, estate manager of Mont Vert Pristine, said they have two swimming pools. "The pool in which the boy drowned has a maximum depth of four feet and was locked for maintenance. It is also secured by high compound walls. The society members use the other pool which has a lifeguard and other facilities," he said.Mule said no one in his society knows how the boy entered the premises and got into the pool.
