General elections for 7th Lok Sabha held in January. After dethrone due to infamous ‘Emergency 1775-77’, Congress leader Indira Gandhi returned to power. Congress had won 374 seats while Janata Dal alliance managed to win on only 72 seats.
Sanjay Gandhi, son of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, had died after a plane crash on June 23. Sanjay Gandhi is known for his ruthless actions against opposition leaders during ‘emergency’. He was considered successor of Indira Gandhi but he died untimely.

The Bhagalpur blinding (Aankhforwa Kand) incidents happened in Bihar. A series of incidents took place in Bhagalpur. In an infamous incident, police blinded 31 individuals under trial (or convicted criminals, according to some versions) by pouring acid into their eyes.
Mohammed Rafi died on July 31, following a massive heart attack. His last song was for the movie Aas Paas with with music director Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The government of India announced a two-day public holiday in his honour. Mohammed Rafi sang thousands of Hindi songs which are yet immortal.
