Gandhi (1982)

With a confident, getting-into-the-skin performance by Kingsley, Gandhi was a humongous commercial and critical success and went on to win an incredible eight Oscars, including the most coveted ones: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor.

 

The Making of the Mahatma (1996)

Directed by ace filmmaker Shyam Benegal, this film is based on the time when Mahatma Gandhi was in South Africa practicing as a barrister. Rajit Kapur, better known as the ‘Byomkesh Bakshi’ of the small screen, played Gandhi and got a National Award.

 

Hey Ram (2000)

The title of the film derives from the last words spoken by Mahatma Gandhi before his death. Starring Kamal Haasan and Shah Rukh Khan in the leads, this film was about the partition.

Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006)

This film gave a dose of Gandhigiri with a mixure of comedy and was one of the best films of that year. Transforming a criminal into a non-violent person, ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’ was one wonderful piece of cinema

Gandhi my Father (2007)

Gandhi My Father explored the disturbed relationship between Mahatma Gandhi (portrayed by Darshan Jariwala) and his son Harilal Gandhi (played by Akshay Khanna). The film was well-received and went on to win three National Film Awards.
