AMU engineering dept organises workshop on ‘structural safety’

Agra: The department of civil engineering at the Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology (ZHCET), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), organised the third national workshop on ‘Reliability and Structural Safety’ on Saturday. The seminar was conducted under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP-III). Even historic structures such as the Taj Mahal were built to survive natural calamities.”Guest of honour, Badrul Hasan Khan, dean, faculty of engineering and technology, said, “The extent of damage to buildings depends not only on the magnitude of earthquakes and other natural calamities but also on the type of construction practice followed in a particular region.” The initiative, said organisers, was to make students and research scholars understand importance of scientific principles when it comes of safety, risk and reliability in the analysis, design, construction, maintenance and operations of structures,Attending the inaugural function as its chief guest, AMU vice chancellor Tariq Mansoor said, “It is important to have earthquake-resistant designs of structures to ensure that buildings are safe when exposed to seismic excitations..
