Plea for safety audit of highways to reduce accidents

The demands include safety audit of all the national and state highways and expressways, installation of CCTV cameras on highways, insurance cover on all tolled roads, increased compensation for hit and run deaths and lower toll for highways not completely developed.ADF secretary K C Jain said, “We have requested PM to order a mandatory safety audit of all highways, expressways and state highways after fixed time period. Agra: On eve of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, citizen rights organization, Agra Development Foundation (ADF), sent a letter to the PM listing a nine-point charter of demands to reduce road accidents. The national highways are unsafe. On basis of the audit report, required repairs and maintenance work should be done in a time- bound manner.”The ADF letter said 4.94 lakh people were injured in road accidents on national highways in 2016. As compared to length of the highways and number of vehicles, there is huge shortage of human resource for traffic management..
