Aligarh police may drop lsquoseditionrsquo charges against 14 AMU students

Agra: The Aligarh police is likely to drop the “sedition” charges against 14 students of Aligarh Muslim University ( AMU ) on “technical grounds”, even as it identified 17 students who were allegedly involved in fracas and vandalising vehicles on the campus on February 12.Confirming the move, Aligarh senior superintendent of police Akash Kulhari said that no evidence has been found relating to the sedition charges. Akhtar said that BJP is trying to vitiate the atmosphere of all the educational institutes, including Jawaharlal Nehru University, Allahabad University (AU) and AMU. A total of 14 students, including AMU students’ union president Salman Imtiaz, vice-president Humza Sufyan, secretary Hufaiza Aamir, former president of the union Maskoor Ahmed, former secretary Nadeem Ansari and other unidentified students, were booked for sedition.The SSP told TOI that summonses were being issued to the proctor office, students’ union and security guards for recording their statements on the February 12 violence. Action will be taken accordingly, Kidwai added.Meanwhile, a delegation of Samajwadi Party leaders, including former cabinet minister Kamal Akhtar, reached AMU to meet the students sitting on a dharna. The committee members will go through the documents provided by the police before submitting its final report..
