Summary:

AGRA: The Aligarh Muslim University Teachers’ Association ( AMUTA ) has demanded that the district administration should give a written assurance that all “fabricated”charges levelled against AMU students in connection with the February 12 violence on the campus will be “dropped”. Students ended their six-day old agitation after getting a verbal assurance from the district administration that no vindictive action will be taken against any student. The general body of AMUTA on Wednesday demanded complete withdrawal of all charges against the students on grounds that they were “fabricated”. He said, both university authorities as well as district administration were responsible for the Feb 12 violence.Secretary of AMUTA Prof Najmul Islam said that AMUTA condemned the dual behaviour of police in handling the fracas. A resolution to the effect was also passed by the AMUTA:AMUTA has also urged other teachers’ bodies, including the Central Universities Teachers Association, Federation of Central Universities’ Teachers’ Associations (FEDCUTA), for support and suggested for a formation of a committee at the national level to fight against the “sedition” charges” slapped against students/academicians/activists in academic institutions across the nation. They alleged that the while the police had promptly registered cases against the students on the basis of allegations levelled by some outsiders, they did not act on a complaint of students forwarded by proctor office of the university..
