50% of season’s rain in 8 days

AHMEDABAD: Like a slow innings of a cricket player, monsoon in Gujarat scored 22.8% of the total seasonal rain (189.9mm) from June 20 to July 12. The data also revealed that region-wise, south Gujarat has received 67.5% of seasonal rain followed by 58.5% in Saurashtra, 38% in east-central Gujarat, 27.5% in north Gujarat and 11% in Kutch. Ahmedabad and periphery, which did not receive much of the seasonal rain, received showers on Friday and Saturday.According to GSDMA data, out of 251 talukas of Gujarat, 24 have received over 1,000mm rain whereas 39 have received 501-1,000mm, 88 have received 251-500mm and 55 have received 126-251mm rainfall. However, it picked up form afterwards and in just eight days (July 13 to 20), it added another 25.5%, totalling 48.3% of the season (401.4 mm). By July 21, Gujarat has received 51.3% of the seasonal rain with 426.7 mm rainfall.Jayanta Sarkar, regional director, India Meteorology Department (IMD), said that the state in past two weeks got good systems both on the coastal area and from the Bay of Bengal which brought in rains in districts of south Gujarat and coastal Saurashtra..
