Amritavarshini: A vav hidden in heart of city

Ahmedabad | Sunday | 11th November, 2018

Summary:

Given this proximity to one of Ahmedabad’s walled city gateways, it is entirely probable that the Amritavarshini vav was built for the benefit of travellers entering the city from this direction. As vehicles and human beings jostle for space near the Panchkuva Darwaza and elsewhere, a visitor to the Amritavarshini vav has the fluttering of pigeons for company. A solitary vav remains today, located so close to this walled city gateway that it looks as if it is clinging to the darwaza in a tight embrace. A plaque installed in the vav shows 1723 as the ayear of its completion, a time when the Mughals were on the decline.Located in the heart of Ahmedabad’s walled city area, the vav seems like an island of calm amidst the sea of noise outside. Perhaps there once were five wells in the vicinity of the Panchkuva Darwaza..
