Ex-IPS Sanjiv Bhatt gets life for custodial death, to appeal verdict

A sessions court in Jamnagar sentenced former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt to life imprisonment on Thursday in connection with a 1990 custodial death case, when he was posted as the additional superintendent of police in the district. Bhatt is already behind bars in connection with a 23-year-old drug planting case, after he was arrested in September 2018. As per the details of the custodial death case, Bhatt along with other police officials had detained around 150 people after a communal riot in Jamjodhpur town on October 30, 1990. The case against Bhatt remained pending for years as the state government did not give its nod for prosecuting him. Now, Bhatt is likely to appeal the conviction and sentence before the high court..
