The sudden spells of rain accompanied with lightning and thunder came as a welcome relief from the intolerable humidity and heat experienced by people all through the day on Friday.

Rain fell perceptibly in western parts while eastern parts of the city remained comparatively dry.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said that the rainfall is not due to onset of monsoon, and instead result of a circulation over eastcentral Arabian sea.

The rainfall is likely to continue in several parts of Gujarat, mentioned the forecast on Friday.

The heat was especially stifling for professionals working from their homes sans the luxury of central air-conditioning in offices.

“It was suffocatingly hot all through the day.

With no wind, working from home without the luxury of central air conditioning, made me miserable and I badly missed the office.

The late evening rains felt like a bliss,” said Pratul Patel, a senior executive in an I-T firm.

According to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) control room, the city received average 24.6mm rainfall between 9pm and 10pm.

Sarkhej and Jodhpur areas recorded the maximum 46mm and 40mm rainfall, followed by 45mm in Gota and 39mm in Bodakdev areas.

In other parts, the rainfall remained limited – Nikol and Ramol received 8mm and Naroda 6mm rainfall.
Manorama Mohanty, director of IMD Gujarat, said that the rainfall and thundershowers are not due to monsoon.

“It’s premonsoon activity as a circulation over east-central Arabian Sea has caused the rainfall in several parts of Gujarat.

The trough from the circulation is extending to parts of central and south Gujarat,” she said, adding that the city and several other regions can expect light to moderate showers on Saturday.

Groups of children playing in societies had to scamper home as strong winds and lightning took all by surprise.

Many residential societies, which are now Covid-free, are seeing activities return to normal for the past few days.

“It’s only from this week that children have started going to play in society compound.
