Kotkapura case: Ex-SSP sent to two-day police remand

BATHINDA: The court of Faridkot judicial magistrate first class (JMIC) Ekta Uppal on Monday sent former SSP Charanjit Singh Sharma to 2-day police remand.Sharma was produced before the court by the special investigation team (SIT) probing cases of sacrilege and police action on protesters at Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan.Earlier, the SIT had brought Sharma from the Patiala jail on production warrants where he was lodged in Behbal Kalan case where two protesters Krishan Bhagwan Singh and Gurjit Singh were killed in police firing on October 14, 2015.The SIT had included him in Kotkapura case as well where police had resorted to cane charge and water canons against those protesting against the sacrilege case.Sharma was arrested from his residence at Hoshiarpur on January 26.The defence counsel claimed that the police is acting on political considerations and wanted to get some confessional statement from Sharma.The prosecution claimed that Kotkapura police action was planned and not a spontaneous incident and his custodial interrogation is needed to get to the bottom of the truth..
