GMCH 1st in state to start DM course in neonatology

Aurangabad: The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has received the approval of the Medical Council of India (MCI) to start its first super-speciality course. Following which the state government and the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) gave their consents for the super-speciality course after on-ground inspections.The approval of state and MUHS was followed by a lot of documentation. “At our neonatology intensive care unit (NICU), we work with premature babies, difficulties in delivery, birth defects and the care required for children for the first 30 days. “The MCI conducted one inspection each in 2017 and 2018 at the hospital to check the availability of faculty, medical facilities and ICU equipment needed for the course after which it gave the approval,” Deshmukh said. With the sanction by national regulators, the hospital has become the first state-run medical college with a super-speciality doctorate of medicine (DM) course in neonatology.Kanan Yelikar, GMCH dean, confirmed on Tuesday that the MCI has approved one seat for the course.Elaborating on the process of applying for the course, LS Deshmukh, the head of the department of neonatology, said, GMCH had applied for the course in July 2017..
