Aurangabad: Police have launched an awareness campaign in all the eight districts of Marathwada to curb incidence of mob lynching sparked by rumours, mainly through social media.The mob lynching fear has not only gripped Marathwada but the entire nation, following a number of incidents in which innocent people have been lynched or thrashed on the suspicion of being child-lifters or robbers.In the last two months, Nagpur, Dhule, Aurangabad rural, Aurangabad city, Jalna, Osmanabad and Latur districts in Maharashtra have witnessed incidents of unidentified people getting attacked by suspicious mobs.In Marathwada, police are spreading awareness through audio and video messages besides putting up banners at public places. These messages are being widely shared.Newly appointed Nanded range special IGP, Suhas Warke, who has been holding the additional charge of Aurangabad range, said, “We are trying to make people aware through various means so that they do not fall prey to rumours being spread through WhatsApp.”The officer said that in rural areas, policemen are reaching out to people in the smallest of villages and trying to educate them..
