Aurangabad: MLA Imtiaz Jaleel on Wednesday announced a door-to-door campaign against all forms of addictions thriving in the city, especially liquor shops that are operating in densely populated, commercial as well as residential areas.The MLA warned that if the liquor shops and bars in the vicinity of schools are not closed down, he would take out a protest rally with school students at the district collectorate.“As a mark of protest, we will fill the liquor bottles with water and give them in the hands of students during the rally so that the administration takes a cognizance of the plea of thousands of citizens,” he said.A signature campaign has been started in three most affected wards in his constituency, during which the party workers would visit homes.The party workers led by corporators have put up stalls where signatures as well as other details of the people would be recorded for registering their protest against liquor shops in their areas.During a news conference, the Aurangabad central MLA made various allegations against the authorities, including the Food and Drug Administration and police, for failing to bring a complete check on substance abuse and drug business in the city.He blamed the excise department for intentionally not taking cognizance of the complaints of the residents against liquor shops and bars.He told TOI, “After we warned police of carrying out an agitation, they took action against drug peddlers for a few days but things have returned to normalcy for them.”.
