Relief worker donates stem cells to cancer patient

BENGALURU: Last week, a 22-year-old social worker, who was busy with relief work in the flood-hit Wayanad district of Kerala, doubled as a stem-cell donor. The youth was airlifted to save an unidentified 24-year-old blood cancer patient in neighbouring Tamil Nadu.On July 13, Mohammed Nafih got a call from the DATRI Blood Stem Cell Registry, where he had registered in 2014, when he was a college student. Considering the patient’s condition, the stem-cell transplant was scheduled for August 17 at a private hospital in Tamil Nadu. That night we stayed in a relief centre at UC College, Aluva, and could not move out.
