6,053 villages lack burial grounds, govt tells HC

As on March 31, 2016, 7,176 villages were in need of burial grounds.Tumakuru (902 villages), Hassan (718), Mandya (470) and Belagavi (361) top the list. BENGALURU: A total of 6,053 villages in the state do not have burial grounds , the government has informed the high court.In a statement submitted to the court in response to a PIL filed by Mohammad Iqbal, the state claimed that between March 2016 and October 2018, 1,123 villages have been provided with burial grounds. In Bengaluru Urban district, 158 villages and in Bengaluru Rural district, 71 require space for burial, the government stated.Apart from earmarking Rs 10 crore in the 2018-19 budget, the government is taking steps to ensure burial grounds in every village/town in 30 districts of the state. The deputy commissioners have been asked to act based on population and requirements of each village, the government stated.The land will be purchased from individuals, paying more than three times the guidance value in places where government land is not available, it added..
