Dutch agency to help BBMP upgrade dry waste centres

BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike ( BBMP ) has decided to upgrade 10 functional dry waste collection centres in collaboration with a Netherlands agency If all goes according to the Palike’s plans, about 1.5 tonnes of dry waste can be re-segregated in four hours. Hence the BBMP commissioner has sought directions from the screening committee,” said an officer.According to officials, the BBMP commissioner had, on December 11, 2017, sought Rs 1.9 crore from the government to upgrade 10 dry waste collection centres. The manpower requirement will also be down by 30%.The Netherlands agency, Sweep Smart, had made a presentation before the expert committee at Mahalakshmi Layout. It takes nearly 8 hours to re-segregate about 1.5 tonnes of dry waste coming to each of the over 166 dry waste collection centres in the city daily.However, to cut down on time, the Netherlands agency will be going in for an elevated conveyor belt sorting practice. Later, the government constituted a committee of experts under the chairmanship of IISc professor Chanakya to review the BBMP’s proposal..
