When he was in his late 30s, a fellow villager beat him up after a scuffle over farm work. Upon learning that Baijnath was kept in chains for more than 20 years the patwari informed the local officials, who apprised Sanjay Sharma, an advocate and social activist.“I visited the village on July 21.
