Odisha seeks Rs 70 crore under SRE scheme

BHUBANESWAR: The state government would seek Rs 70 crore from the Centre under the security related expenditure (SRE) scheme for the year 2018-19 financial year.The amount would be spent to strengthen police infrastructure in 19 left wing extremism (LWE)-hit districts of the state, official sources said.It was decided here at a meeting headed by chief secretary A P Padhi, which was attended by senior home department officials and top cops.“It was a 100 per cent centrally sponsored scheme. According to sources, the state government is waiting to receive Rs 280 crore from the Centre as it has already spent under the scheme in previous years.The Centre has currently deployed 17 battalions of CAPFs including eight each battalions of Central Reserve Police Force and Border Security Force and one battalion of Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (COBRA), a specialized unit in the state, official sources said. Expenses related to training of police personnel, procuring arms and ammunitions, logistic, fuel and vehicle expenditure of the central armed police force deployed in anti-Maoist operations are also being borne from SRE fund.Ex-gratia provided to families of civilians or security personnel killed during anti-Maoist operations are also being provided from the fund.Under the scheme, the state government spends the amount which is later reimbursed by the Union ministry of home affairs..
