Shortage of vets hits dog sterilization programme

BHUBANESWAR: The dog sterilization programme in the city had gained pace in the run-up to the Men’s Hockey World Cup last year. At present, there are two veterinary doctors for the purpose. However, it lost its momentum in the aftermath of the international sporting event.Sources said the animal birth control (ABC) programme to check the population of stray dogs has taken a beating due to the shortage of veterinary doctors. “If 1,000 dogs are sterilized in a month, the population can be reduced considerably,” Sashibhusan Swain, nodal officer of the ABC programme, said.The city records about 35 dog bite cases every day..
