Gold worth 33 lakh seized at airport

BHUBANESWAR: The intelligence wing of the customs on Tuesday seized Rs 33 lakh worth of smuggled gold from a woman passenger at the Biju Patnaik International Airport here. "On searching her belongings, we found nine pieces of gold bars and another nine pieces of irregularly shaped gold. The gold was in the form of bars.The passenger had just arrived from Delhi when the intelligence officials were alerted by her 'suspicious' movements. Further investigation is on," said an officer from the customs.This is the second case of gold smuggling coming to the light this year. In 2018, around Rs 3 crore worth of the yellow metal was seized by the customs and the directorate of revenue intelligence.Gold trafficking cases started surfacing after the airport started direct international flights to Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok and activated its customs cell..
