Varsity honour for J’khand guv Murmu

Bhubaneswar: Jharkhand governor Droupadi Murmu received doctor of literature (honoris causa) from her alma mater Rama Devi Womens’ University (previously Rama Devi Womens’ College) on the occasion of the institution’s first convocation here on Saturday. Odisha governor Ganeshi Lal, who is also chancellor of the university, handed over the certificates of honorary degree to Murmu.Murmu, 60, from Uperbeda village in Kusumi block of Mayurbhanj district, completed her graduation in 1978-79 from the institution. She was a government servant before entering politics in 1997. She was two-time MLA from Rairangpur assembly seat between 2000 and 2009 and served Odisha as a minister from 2000 to 2004.Murmu, who belongs to a Santal tribal family, is the first Odia woman to become governor of a state..
