Odisha government approves a state-of-art cancer hospital in Bhubaneswar

The Odisha government on Monday approved a proposal for setting up of Bagchi-Sri Shankar Cancer Hospital and Research Institute and Bagchi-Karunashray Palliative Care Center in Bhubaneswar.

The state cabinet approved the proposal in a meeting chaired by CM Naveen Patnaik.

The Odisha government on Monday approved a proposal for setting up of Bagchi-Sri Shankar Cancer Hospital and Research Institute and Bagchi-Karunashray Palliative Care Center in Bhubaneswar.

Reports said that Mindtree co-founder and chairman of Skill Development Authority Subroto Bagchi and his wife Sushmita have promised to donate Rs 340 crore to set up a world-class palliative care unit and a state-of-the-art cancer hospital.

For Bagchi-Sri Shankar Cancer Hospital and Research Institute, Subroto Bagchi and Sushmita Bagchi gave Rs 210 crore.

The state government will provide 20 acres of land for the hospital at Infocity-II in Bhubaneswar for free.

The cancer hospital will be set up by the Sri Shankar Cancer Care Foundation, a charitable Bangalore-based institution with philanthropic practice.


The Cancer Hospital will provide state-of-the-art cancer care with evidence-based management of cancer cases.

The hospital will initially start with 250 beds which will be operational by January 2024.

A release said that it would be upgraded to a 500-bed hospital.
