Underage drinking: 7 bars in trouble

CHANDIGARH: The UT excise and taxation department has asked seven bars and pubs, who were challaned for violating the rules by serving liquor to youths below the age of 25 years, to submit their written replies on September 21.As per Section 23 of the Punjab Excise Act, 1915, the legal age of consuming liquor in Chandigarh is 25 years.Presently, a majority of the hotels, restaurants and bars in the city do not ask youngsters about their age before serving them liquor.Recently, the excise and taxation department had imposed a penalty of Rs 1 lakh on Sector 26-based hotel for one-plus-onefree offer on liquor..
