Child protection team stops minor's marriage

AMBALA: A team of the special cell for women and children protection on Sunday stopped a child marriage at village Seoli in Punjab's Mohali district "Our team received the information via child helpline about the marriage of a 14-year-old minor girl who was getting married to a 28-year-old man," child protection-cum-prohibition officer Arvinderjeet Kaur said. They had intentionally organised the marriage at a village of Punjab in order to avoid action against them from Haryana authorities. "The team reached the spot and took in writing from the families to not conduct the marriage of the girl till she is adult.Earlier on Saturday, the protection team had stopped another child marriage which was taking place at Kheri Manakpur village. "As per the information, both the girl and man are residents of Haryana's Ambala district, but they had organised the event at Handesara village in Punjab 's Mohali - a village on the Haryana and Punjab border. When the families came to know about the raid by the protection team, they took the girl and the man to Seoli Gurdwara," he added.The protection team immediately contacted the concerned station house officer (SHO) near Handesra from Punjab Police, which helped it stop the minor's marriage.Arvinderjeet said, "The girl is only 14 years old, a resident of Shahzadpur tehsil, while the man is 28 years old, a resident of Gazipur - both are residents of district Ambala..
