Summary:

CHANDIGARH: People in Punjab will soon be able to reach out to all the emergency services on a single toll-free number 112, similar on pattern of 911 all-in-one emergency service in America and 000 in Australia. At present, there are different emergency numbers — police (100), fire (101) and ambulance (102) — and response system. To begin with, 112 will replace the police helpline (100) in the next two months, while other emergency numbers will be added subsequently. ERSS has been designed to address all emergency signals received from citizens through voice call, e-mail, panic SOS signal, and ERSS web portal. The project is funded jointly by the Union home ministry and the Punjab government. Funds to the tune of Rs 9.28 crores have been allocated by the Centre..
