Railway station in new hands for makeover

The two-phase work of building a world-class station in Chandigarh will start with passenger amenities and parking lots on the city and Panchkula sides, and finish with leasing out commercial property for 99 years. CHANDIGARH: From Thursday, central government’s special purpose vehicle Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation ( IRSDC ) will manage the passenger services at the local railway station and pilot the project of making it world-class.Northern Railway stated in an official order issued on Wednesday that its divisional manager at Ambala Cantonment had given this approval in the spirit of the station-management agreement with the IRSDC, which required all existing contracts to be transferred from the railway board to the corporation. The corporation will execute the station development project worth Rs 135 crore and keep whatever the place earns from parking lots, platform ticket, waiting rooms, snack bar, platform stalls, executive lodge, and retiring rooms, only to put it back into the station’s development.The railways will manage only train operations, ticket booking, and freight parcel..
